- Description
- Ghana is one of the countries in sub-Saharan Africa experiencing population ageing spanning from decreasing death and delayed mortality. Even though this development is a success, it raises concerns for the long-term care (LTC) needs of older people in Ghana. The overall aim of this chapter is to discuss the LTC needs of older people as a multifactorial concept, drawing attention to the need for multiple interventions to prepare for and sustain LTC for older people in Ghana. This chapter first sets the scene for contextual understanding by discussing the evolution of familial care for older people in the country. It then draws attention to the urgent issue of LTC for older people in light of increasing care needs of older people, the burden on caregivers and the support systems that exist in the Ghanaian context, including care institutions. Finally, the chapter offers some practical recommendations for preparing for, enacting, implementing, and sustaining LTC systems and arrangements unique to older people’s needs in the Ghanaian context.
